Finding Rest in the Hustle: Embracing God’s Peace in Your Busy Life

Some mornings I wake up and before I even swing my feet out of bed, my brain is already racing: What’s for breakfast? Did I reply to that email? Is it swimming day or football? And wait...did I confirm that client meeting? The pressure starts before the kettle has even boiled. If you're anything like me; a mum trying to manage both the demands of home and the calling of work or business, then you know exactly what this feels like.
We’re always “on.” Always juggling. Always giving. And while we know we need rest, the thought of actually resting can sometimes feel like a luxury we can’t afford.
But here’s what I’ve been learning lately, rest isn’t just about having time off. It’s about who you’re resting in. And Jesus makes a very personal invitation to women like us:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
This scripture doesn’t say, “Come when your to-do list is done.” It doesn’t say, “Come after the kitchen is clean.” It says come 'as you are'. Burdened. Tired. Worn out. And He will give you rest.
That kind of rest goes deeper than sleep or a Sunday nap (though I won’t turn those down either!). It’s a rest that touches your soul. A peace that steadies your heart, even when your world feels loud, messy, and chaotic.
The Reality of a Busy Mum's Life
Let’s be honest, some weeks feel like a never-ending race. I’ve had those days where I’m literally running from one activity to the next. Football club in the morning, swimming lessons in the afternoon, a birthday party squeezed in the middle, and still needing to figure out what to cook for dinner. All while trying to reply to messages from clients or respond to deadlines.
I remember once driving to three different locations on a Saturday before noon. By the time I sat down, my legs were aching, and my mind was spinning. And in that moment, I just whispered, “Lord, I need your help.” It wasn’t a fancy prayer. Just an honest one. And somehow, just like that, I felt a wave of calm come over me.
That’s what Jesus does. He steps into our chaos, not to remove all the tasks, but to carry them with us.
You Don’t Have to Prove Yourself
One of the biggest lies many of us silently carry is this: “If I’m not doing enough, I’m not enough.” Whether it’s in parenting, work, or even our spiritual life, we start measuring our worth by our productivity.
But the truth is, God doesn’t see us that way. He never asked us to prove ourselves through performance. He invites us to rest in His love and trust that He’s working even when we pause.
You don’t need to earn God’s peace. It’s a gift, available to you right now, even with dishes in the sink and emails waiting to be answered.
Peace in the Small Moments
Rest doesn’t always mean a spa day or a weekend away (though we’ll take those when we can!). Sometimes rest shows up in the tiniest moments. Whispering a prayer while stirring the soup. Listening to worship music while driving to pick up the kids. Taking five minutes to just sit in silence before the day begins
God meets us in those pockets of time. He doesn’t need hours to fill your heart with peace, He just needs your invitation.
When I started inviting God into my everyday moments, not just my devotional time but my dinner-making, laundry-folding, and business-planning moments, I started experiencing His presence in a new way. Life didn’t get less busy, but I stopped feeling so burdened.
Letting Go of the Striving
We live in a world that praises hustle. “Keep going.” “Do more.” “Push harder.” But Jesus offers a different rhythm; one that’s not about burnout but balance, not about pressure but peace.
God’s rest doesn’t mean we stop working. It just means we stop striving. It means trusting that God is present in our pace, and that He’s not waiting at the finish line, but walking beside us.
Even in your work, He can give you ideas, favor, and clarity when you’re not scrambling to do it all on your own. Even in parenting, He can give you wisdom and patience, when you feel like you have nothing left to give.
When we work from a place of rest, not exhaustion, we can lead, serve, and love more effectively.
Inviting Rest Into Your Week
You may not be able to control how busy this week will be. But you can choose to respond differently.
What if, instead of powering through, you paused to pray? What if you allowed God to take the weight off your shoulders and carry it with you?
Here’s a small challenge: Sometime today, take five minutes to just be still. Breathe deeply. Close your eyes. Whisper a prayer, even if it’s just “Help me, Lord.” Ask Him to fill you with His peace and strength.
Then, make space for a few check-ins with God throughout your week. Nothing big ...just moments where you remember you're not alone in this. You’re not expected to carry the weight of your family, your business, or your future alone. He’s already carrying it with you.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been feeling like you’re constantly moving but not really living… if you’ve been caught in the loop of doing, giving, juggling, let this blog be your reminder:
God is not asking for your performance. He’s offering you His presence.
So come. Not when it’s quiet. Not when everything’s done. Come now; messy bun, half-ticked to-do list, full heart, and receive the rest He freely gives.
Because, dear busy mama, you don’t have to do it all. You just need to walk with the One who already has.
